歴史地理学コースとは？
歴史地理学とは何か
歴史地理学とは、あまり聞きなれない名称かもしれません。歴史学なのか地理学なのか、という疑問をもつ人もあるでしょう。
かつては、歴史学の補助分野として、歴史の舞台となった場所を考証することなどが、歴史地理学であると考えられていた時代もありました。しかし今日では、歴史地理学は学問の本質論や方法論からは、一般的に地理学の一分野として位置づけられており、地域や空間、景観、環境といった地理学で発達してきた基礎概念をふまえて、過去の人間集団が地表面をいかに組織し、生きてきたかを追究する分野として認識されています。簡単にいえば、地理学の観点から歴史を研究するのが歴史地理学であるといえます。本コースは、全国でも数少ない歴史地理学を専門的に学べるコースです。歴史学とは違った観点から歴史を研究してみたい、現在を研究する地理学とは関心が異なっていると感じる人には格好のコースといえるでしょう。

- 歴史地理学実習はどんな授業？
- 歴史地理学の研究は、室内でのデスクワークと野外でのフィールドワークの両方から成り立っています。歴史地理学実習では、事前学習をふまえて調査地に赴き、野外での景観観察や聞き取り調査などの方法や、現地でしか入手できない文献資料（古文書など）の調査方法を学ぶとともに、調査結果を報告書としてまとめる能力を養います。

今、みなさんが当たり前のようにみている目の前の景色は、いつ、だれによって、どのようにして造られたのでしょうか？人類が誕生して以来、人間は私たちが想像するよりもはるか長い年月をかけて、自分たちの暮らしのために土地を改変し、彼らの生活の営みの痕跡を土地に残してきました。私たちが現在見ている景色は、そうした人間の生活の営みによって土地に残された痕跡の集積であると考えることが出来るでしょう。そして私たちは、目の前の景色から何か一つ人間の営みの痕跡を見つけることができれば、それを起点にその土地で営まれてきた人間の生活を学ぶことができます。歴史地理学は、人間の歴史を「土地」や「景観」といった地理的な側面から学ぶことが出来るという面白さがあります。
私は筑波大学で歴史地理学を学んで、自分の中の歴史学のイメージを覆されました。私はそれまで、歴史学と聞くと、「文献を読み込む」という強いイメージがありました。しかし、歴史地理学で重要視されるのは「土地を歩く」ことでした。歴史地理学ではフィールドワークを重視しており、学生は実際に自分で土地を歩く中で、人々の暮らしぶり見たり、聞いたりしながらその土地の歴史を辿っていきます。そうした学びかたは、歴史学のなかでも歴史地理学ならではだと思います。歴史学に興味がある方のなかでも、フィールドワークや街歩きが好きな方は、歴史地理学の関心と強くマッチすると思います。是非、私たちと一緒に歴史地理学を学んでみませんか？
About the Historical Geography Course
What is Historical Geography?
The name “Historical Geography” may be quite unfamiliar. Some people may ask which one is it—history or geography?
There was a time when historical geography was considered ancillary to history, where scholars investigated the sites where historical events took place. Today, however, historical geography generally falls under the category of geography, based on the nature and methodology of the discipline, and is seen as a field that researches how human groups of the past organized and lived on the Earth’s surface using basic concepts of geography such as region, space, landscape, and environment. To put it more simply, historical geography is the study of history from a geographical perspective. This is one of few courses in Japan that specializes in historical geography. This course is perfect for those who want to study history from a different perspective than ordinary history courses and who feel their interests differ modern geography.

Course Introduction
- What Kind of Class is Field Research in Historical Geography?
- Historical Geography research consists of both indoor deskwork and outdoor fieldwork. In Field Research in Historical Geography, students visit sites based on their prior studies, where they learn how to observe outdoor landscapes, conduct interviews, and research literary materials (ancient documents, etc.) that can only be obtained on-site, as well as cultivate the skills needed to compile the research finding into a report.

What do you think of when you hear “historical geography"? I believe that this is a very practical discipline within the field of history. Students research history by surveying a specific area or region through fieldwork or studying the literature. This allows us not only to imagine the past, but the future as well. I believe that this discipline connects the teachings of the past to the future.
All kinds of research topics fall under historical geography. You can choose whatever topic interests you, from transportation, commerce, cities, tourism, and more. You can choose a place to investigate freely according to your interests, making it possible to do even more profound research.
Classes teach students about historical geography research methods and how to read literature, and also offer lectures on various research topics. Among the things you learn, fieldwork and interview methods required for researching historical geography are learned through practice. Making new discoveries through practice and compiling what you discover is extremely fun.
